Make Your Secondhand Clothes Last Twice as Long

The cheapest clothes you'll ever own are the ones you never have to replace. A secondhand jacket that cost you $40 can outlast three $40 fast-fashion jackets — if you treat it right. Here's how to get your money's worth out of every piece in your closet.

WASH COLD, AND WASH LESS

Most fabric wear comes from your washing machine, not from your body. Hot water and long hot cycles break down fibers and fade color faster than almost anything else. Cold water gets clothes just as clean for everyday wear, and it's cheaper on your electric bill too. Wash jeans, sweaters, and jackets only when they actually need it. Jeans can go many wears between washes — spot-clean stains and air them out between.

SKIP THE DRYER

Heat is the enemy. Dryers shrink, fade, and wear out elastic, screen prints, and delicate knits. Hang-dry when you can — a cheap drying rack pays for itself fast. If you must use the dryer, go low heat and pull things out while they're still slightly damp. Leather, wool, cashmere, and anything with beading or prints should never see a dryer.

FIX THE SMALL STUFF IMMEDIATELY

A loose button is a five-minute job. Left alone, it's a lost button, then a missing button, then a shirt you stop wearing. Keep a basic sewing kit in a drawer and handle repairs the day you notice them. Small holes in seams are the same story — a few stitches along a popped seam keeps pants in rotation for years.

STORE THEM LIKE YOU MEAN IT

Fold knits — never hang them, or gravity stretches the shoulders. Hang structured jackets and blazers on real hangers, not wire ones. Give shoes room to breathe, and cedar blocks in the closet keep moths off your wool.

WHY IT MATTERS

Every time you keep a piece in rotation instead of replacing it, you save real money and keep one more item out of the waste stream. Buying secondhand is half the solution. Making it last is the other half. Browse the racks at Budmilacloset.com — every piece there is a quality find that deserves a long second life.
